Dooradoyle native, Gillian Johnston married Ballysteen man, Jason Downes, on January 14, 2023, at Castletown Church in Pallaskenry and later celebrated their nuptials at the Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel in Adare, Limerick with 130 close family and friends.

The Meet

Friendship blossomed between 15 year olds Gillian and Jason through a local youth council. They spent many years getting to know each other while on day trips and weekends away together but it wasn’t until they were in their late teens, early 20s that their friendship became a steady relationship and they fell in love.

The Engagement

On March 12, 2022, Jason, a landscaper, and farmer, proposed to chartered accountant Gillian, while on a weekend break to Copenhagen, Denmark. He used a promise ring he purchased in Matthew Stephens to pop the question and, together, they designed a ring and had it made from Elaine in Dubai Diamonds.

The Wedding

Joined by three bridesmaids and three groomsmen, Gillian and Jason had the most amazing day of their lives and will never forget their fabulous wedding reception at the Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel. “We were so grateful that everyone was there to celebrate our day. We had guests fly from New Zealand, Australia, America and London. Our favourite memories include getting ready with our bridesmaids and groomsmen that morning, catching the first glance of each other from opposite ends of the aisle and meeting our guests after the ceremony. Jason in his speech, being a farmer, presented me with a pair of pink wellies. We are living on the farm which has been a big adjustment to me as a city girl, so this got a great laugh from our guests. Although I’m still not much use on the farm,” shares Gillian.

The bride’s wedding gown was from Virginia’s Bridal in Limerick, an A-line dress with sleeves. Their amazing wedding cake was from Cakes by Deborah, and they hired Declan from SES Digital to capture their whole day on film so they would have memories forever. Dan and his team from Lawless Flowers provided their stunning bouquets and flowers. Gillian and Jason chose wedding invites from Orla of Limelight Stationery.

The bride walked up the aisle to “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri and their first dance as a married couple was “Beautiful in White” by Shane Filan. They treated their guests to a whisky bar and passionfruit cocktails at their drinks reception and guests were wowed by turf fires lit as they approached the entrance to the Woodlands.

Their favourite picture taken by Rose from Baker Photography was at Beagh Castle in front of the water. “This place is just a few minutes from where Jason grew up. He spent lots of days throughout his childhood down here with his parents and grandparents. It is also just a few minutes from where we are living ourselves. Rose took amazing photos down here; the sky and river looked incredible.”

Gillian's one piece of advice

“enjoy the day and the run up to the day as it goes by so fast. Would also say to get a good photographer and videographer as this will be what you have left to remember the day.”

How was your experience with Baker Photography?

“Baker Photography are amazing. Rose was our photographer with a little help from her son Kenneth who was our groomsman. We had seen their work over the years and had seen them both at weddings before, so we knew we were in the best hands. Rose is an outstanding photographer; her attention to detail is second to none, and this is shown in the amazing photos she took. Not only is she great behind the camera, but her personality is exactly what you want in a person who is involved in your entire wedding day. She is great fun and kept everyone smiling and provided great guidance and advice on the day while keeping us all relaxed.”

How was your experience with the Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel?

“Elaina, the Fitzgerald family, and Woodlands staff are a pleasure to deal with. No request was too big or too small and they were great at communicating with us in the lead up to the wedding. The way they set up the drinks reception and main room was perfect. The food was incredible; several guests said it was the nicest meal they had at any wedding. Nothing was too much trouble from them. They were so accommodating to each guest.”
